Kamalkk Kannan asked:
HCL conducts campus interviews (placements) and recruits software engineers in large numbers from engineering colleges all over India. The process takes two full days to complete. Let us discuss the various processes involved.
Three stages in HCL Campus placements are are:
1. Placement tests involving quantitative aptitude questions and Technical aptitude questions.
2. Technical Interview.
3. HR Interview.
Aptitude questions usually carry puzzles, data interpretation problems and CAT (prominent MBA entrance examination in India conducted by IIMs) type questions. Generally the questions will very similar to those found in famous aptitude books from Agarwal and Shakunthala Devi. There are instances where few questions were asked directly from these books as well. These questions are very easy to solve with adequate preparation. A careful approach is required when choosing which questions to solve first.
Technical interview questions will be from candidate’s engineering subjects, projects, areas of interest and other basic programming fundamentals. Generally these questions need to be answered as briefly as possible. Occasionally the interviewer can ask you to solve a technical problem in front of him with a paper and pen. Computer science students would generally be drilled in programming fundamentals and C. In many cases, code snippets would be given and candidates are required to debug those. Candidates may also be asked to devise algorithm for a problem given on the spot. For example, interviewer may ask for an algorithm to solve “Sudoku” puzzle using C.
HR interview requires almost no preparation and is merely a formality in most cases. This interview is just a final check of candidate’s attitude and confidence level. Candidate’s behaviour, language and dressing could be observed in the interview. Normally ninety percentage of the candidates would easily clear this interview.
