Stress Management – How to Do More and Enjoy Life

Monday, January 26th, 2009
Susan Kersley asked:

What is the secret for a life with little or no stress? What can you do to make a difference? You can decide that from this moment on you will make sure that you will do something each and every day to enjoy yourself.

What you decide to do to enjoy life more is, of course up to you. However whatever you choose ought, ideally, be something which engages your interest, is fun to be involved in, is a break from your day to day stress and actually helps to reduce nervous tension worries and tension. It’s helpful to your general health and well-being and your satisfaction of life if these activities can involve you in meeting people regularly too.

Here are some questions for you to answer to help you uncover your own particular interests:

Do you prefer to do things on your own?

Do you prefer to do things with others?

Do you like exercising?

What sort of music do you like?

Can you play an instrument?

Do you want to sing?

Solo

Amateur opera or musicals

Karoake

Movement:

on your own, or with others: dance, run, exercise in a gym, swim, walking, hiking, climbing, abseiling,

with someone else: play tennis, play golf

as part of a team: football, rugby, netball, basket ball, rounders,

on or in water: swimming, canoeing, sailing, surfing, diving, snorkelling

Make music:

on your own: sing or in a group

play an instrument as part of a group: join a choir, band or orchestra,

Be entertained:

on your own or with others: go to a concert, cinema, theatre, hire a DVD, watch television

Stretch:

yoga, t’ai chi, martial arts

Relaxation:

lying on the beach, listening to a relaxation recording, listening to music

Benefits of different activities:

Anything outdoors with a connection with nature can be particularly stress-busting, because you will tend to relax and exercise more when you are in the fresh air.

All activities involving exercise release feel-good endorphins as well as having physical benefits, so you will feel relaxed and have a sense of well-being afterwards.

Activities which stretch you mentally such as crossword puzzles or Sudoku will help boost brain-power all your life.

All exercise energises body, mind and spirit. Exercise keeps you fit and flexible, keeps your muscles and joints working well, helps you maintain a normal weight, enables you to look and feel younger than your biological age.

Sudoku A Puzzle To Test Those With Agile Minds

Sunday, January 18th, 2009
Terry Till asked:

Sudoku is a great mind game that tests the brain to solve which at first looks like a simple puzzle.

The idea if sudoku is to place the numbers from 1 to 9 in a grid without duplicating the same number in any vertical or horizontal line.

The grid that sudoku is played on consists of one major grid which in turn is divided into nine smaller grids of nine boxes.

Each smaller grid has to have the numbers one to nine placed within it but at the same time you have to consider the larger grid, which also has to contain these digits.

There are many free sudoku games online that allow you to play from a simple and easy level of competence upgrading to some very tough levels, which will test even those with the most agile of brains.

I play sudoku myself and find the challenge great fun although beware because this game can become very addictive and it’s very easy to spend many hours playing once you begin.

If you are new to the sudoku game it’s probably best to start off with the easy level of play and then progress as you get more confident and your skills increase.

Of course as you get better at playing the game you can then even start to time yourself to see how quickly you can solve the puzzle and again most sudoku websites will provide a timer just for this purpose.

Although the sudoku puzzle game can be a great source of endless fun for the individual it is surprising how well this game has become recognised worldwide and now there are competitions taking place on regular intervals.

4 Unique Ways To Increase Your IQ

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
Sean Brown asked:

Here are just a few unorthodox yet immediate ways to activate your brain and engage your mind.

1. RA’K up the IQ points with a DVORAK keyboard!

No, that’s not the noise your cat makes when it’s choking on a hairball, it’s a type of keyboard! The standard typeset is QWERTY, which came into standardization with the invention of the first typewriters*. QWERTY is an arrangement of keys that was actually designed to slow typists down! This was because typewriters were notoriously feckless and often broke down or seized up due to people simply typing too fast. So, in an ironic twist of fate the most popular typeset is in fact the most inefficient one! Which brings us back to DVORAK which is thought to be the most efficient typeset. In fact, for every mile that your fingers travel on a DVORAK keyboard, they’d have traveled 4 miles on a standard QWERTY keyboard! By learning something new and alien you’re engaging the parts of your mind that deal with language and logic. You will also be forced to utilize your memory as you begin to learn where the keys are and the fastest paths to them. In short, a great mental work out- learn to type faster AND increase your intelligence while doing so.

* Note: “Typewriter” is the longest word you can make using only letters from the top run of your keyboard

2. Cubic Cognitive Comprehension

The most misspelled* puzzle in history, the Rubik’s Cube was invented in the 70’s by a Hungarian architect and is said to be the most sold toy in the world! It’s also one of the best for pushing your gray matter into action. You’re bound to know someone who has one stored away in a dusty, old box in the attic marked “70’s” along with the Greece soundtrack on vinyl and a pair of green flares. If not, pick one up at your local toy store for pennies and get shuffling. The brain bending puzzle takes a long time to complete and is all about pattern recognition and sequence memorization. Hours of puzzling fun!

* Note: Misspelled is one of the most misspelled words in the English language!

3. Sodiku.. Sodak..Sudako..Sod it!

The word sudoku derives from the Japanese phrase “Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru” which means “the numbers must be single” or “the numbers must occur only once”. That doesn’t stop me from spelling it wrong every time I try. Sudoku is a great and popular puzzle because the rules are so simple yet the methods to solve it can be extraordinarily difficult. Sudokus range from easy to fiendishly hard and there are many different kinds to try out once you get bored of the standard version so you’ll never run short of logical, brain engrossing material.

*Note: You can actually buy Sudoku themed Rubik’s cubes, so you can kill two birds with one stone!

4. Juggle your way to smarts

The left hemisphere of your brain controls your right hand and the right hemisphere of your brain controls your left hand. This means that by using your less dominant hand you are stimulating the opposite and lesser used half of your brain. This is a common phenomena which explains why ambidextrous people are often very intelligent. Taking up juggling is not only a good way to show off to your friends but it will wake up different parts of your mind and all you need is a few apples or oranges!
