The Most Popular Strategy Board Games

Thursday, February 26th, 2009
Steven Barnhart asked:

Ever antiquity mankind has entertained him self with strategy board games. The phenomenon continues even today, despite the popularity of video games. Why? Well, strategy board games challenge the mind while giving people a chance to relax with one another. And, they offer a classic form of entertainment that’s not dependant on batteries or electricity.

So, what are the most popular strategy board games on the market? Well, technically there are hundreds, but when it comes to worldwide popularity, there are seven strategy board games that are at the top of the list. They include: Chess, Cribbage, Mahjong, Go Game, Sudoku, Backgammon, and Checkers.

1. Chess

Chess is one of the world’s most popular strategy board games. Originating in ancient India and Persia, the game has emerged in many forms. The most common form is known as Western chess. This is where two opponents must capture each other’s kings. This is done through chess pieces that have different levels of power, (kings, queens, rooks, etc.). Strategy must be used to determine how a particular piece can result in a checkmate.

2. Cribbage

When it comes to strategy board games, cribbage is one of the most unusual. While a ‘board’ is used during the game, cribbage is played with cards. The board is used to help keep score. Either way, cribbage is a great alternative for people who want to play a card game that relies more on thinking than luck.

3. Mahjong

Unlike other strategy board games, mahjong was actually created based on spiritual and philosophical principles. So, if Eastern philosophies are your thing, you could be helping both your soul and you mind after a game of mahjong.

4. Go Game

Go Game is another strategy board game created from Asia. It works like chess, as players must dominate their opponent’s spaces on the board. However, the pieces are much simpler, as they consist of black and white stones.

5. Sudoku

Sudoku is a strategy board game where you must fill in a grid with numbers 1 through 9. However, the catch is you must use the numbers once for each section. It is this characteristic of Sudoku that makes it one of the most sought after strategy board games of all time.

Which Countries Grow the Best Coffee Beans?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
Scott Andrew Richards asked:

If you are like me and you love coffee, you are probably consistently searching for that perfect cup. Well, the perfect cup starts with the perfect bean. And the perfect bean is largely based upon the combination of soil quality and climate. So when you think of the perfect country for coffee bean growth what comes to mind? Probably, somewhere tropical. A place with regular rain and sun. If you are like most people you will undoubtedly say “Brazil”. It’s true, Brazil is the biggest dog on the block accounting for a whopping one-third of all coffee bean production. Its climate is ideal for coffee bean production. It’s no wonder they hold top spot. But, do they make the best bean?

Ironically, coffee bean production did not start in Brazil. It actually began in Ethiopia. Even though they can still be seen there they’re popularity has spread. Today you can find coffee beans being produced in many countries throughout the free world. Matter of fact, there are now about seventy some countries officially growing coffee beans. Unfortunately, only a few of these countries actually have the most ideal situation for producing beans of a high quality. Aside from Brazil, some of the most popular destinations for coffee bean production are Columbia, Indonesia, Hawaii and Mexico.

We must not forget that aside from climate and soil quality, the altitude at which beans are grown has a significant impact on their quality. The higher they are grown the better. With this in mind we must give some attention to Columbia. They certainly produce some of the best beans in the world. However, its poor economy and underdeveloped infrastructure makes transport to processing plants difficult. Therefore, I am sure we are not seeing the best that that country has to offer.

If you have ever had Hawaiian coffee, you probably will swear up and down that it is the best in the world. Well you could be right. Even though they don’t produce large quantities Hawaii’s volcanic ash, large amounts of rainfall and hot sweltering sun create the perfect environment for production. There is, also, probably something to the small quantities they produce. The small crafted feel no doubt enhances Hawaii’s mystic as a supreme coffee bean producer. Much like we see here in the states with regards to small-batch Bourbons.

Lastly, a very popular place that could possibly win the best coffee bean award would have to be Indonesia. The countries humid climate is ripe for perfect growth. Also, they have taken the production of coffee beans to new heights. They use very advanced technologies that help them grow beans in remote places like Java and Sulawesi. Coffee is so popular from this area that we often euphemistically refer to our coffee as a “Cup of Java”.

Sudoku Download Games – The Benefits of Playing Sudoku Games on Your PC

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
Vee Berrie asked:

The popular SuDoKu puzzle now comes in many formats, from the old pen and paper and board games to some great free SuDoKu PC games which are available online as downloads. Whilst purists may prefer the old paper version, I really enjoy the electronic versions because they incorporate all the benefits and fun of the classic puzzle but with more visual compelling features and some amazing graphical representations.

SoDoKu PC downloads come in many themes and variations and some involve additional features such as a background story, quest or treasure hunt. So that there are not just about solving a basic numerical riddle but a SoDoKu with symbols or hidden codes that have to be solved in order to uncover clues.

For example I have been enjoying playing a game called Ancient SuDoKu; this has a tribal theme to it and uses colored gems as well as numbers in its puzzles. This makes this PC game more visual and gives the classic SuDuKu a new twist.

I enjoy doing SuDoKo as it is a great way to build up logic and my skills of deduction. Deduction is required to eliminate each of the possible variables in each cell of a grid. Typically the grid size had been a 9 times 9 grid. Nowadays the grid can be bigger, different shapes or use different symbols. All SuDuKu puzzles will start with some cells pre-filled to help you get started. The number of cells that have been pre-filled will determine how easy or difficult the puzzles are. Usually the levels of difficulty are split into easy, medium, hard and difficult.

There are many sites where I can get free SoDoKu games, by printing off and solving them on paper one by one. But the benefit of downloading full free SuDoKu PC games is that I have access to unlimited SuDoKo games right there on my computer. I can then choose when and which level to play – from easy to difficult with out having to print them off.

I can also get hints to help me, there and then. And also get the complete solution if I really get stuck! The Ancient SuDuKu game (I mentioned above) is a particular favorite of mine as it includes a puzzle solver feature. This means I can even put in any SuDoKo puzzle that I get from say a newspaper or magazine and enter the given pre-filled numbers into the solver. Then I can play it on my PC, use the hints button in the puzzle solver if I’m stuck or get it to completely solve it for me if I really can’t solve it on my own, which is pretty cool!

Whenever I have a spare moment I bring up my PC SoDoKu game and have quick go. They say that doing these sort of logic puzzles every day helps to give your brain a bit of a workout. I find it is also good way of taking a break from my work or any other intense mental activity! Doing a SuDoKu brainteaser gives my mind a break from the tasks in hand by shifting my focus onto something completely different and is a good trick to becoming more productive at work.
